“I had a really troubled youth. My mom was murdered when I was young, and I was raised by my grandmother in Camden County. I fell in with the wrong crowd and got addicted to heroin when I was still young. I moved out here to get away form all of that, but then I fell in the wrong type of people again ou here and kept relapsing. I have finally been clean for four years now.
“But it is hard. My mind races a lot with bad negative thoughts and I know that can lead me into trouble. Every day it is a battle to keep myself from going back to using. That is my biggest challenge to keep on the straight path.
“I don’t do meetings. They are just not my thing. I just try to stay positive. That’s why I work so much, seven days a week, every week, to keep myself out of trouble.
“I have to look at it this way, though. I came from a lot of bad times in my life, but I have a good job, I am healthy, and I am working on my relationship with my 5-year-old son, who lives with his mother. I really have come a long way from where I was, and I cannot forget where I came from. I just have to keep battling to stay clean.”
